2007- 2008 School Programs

Henricus Historical Park features programs relating to Colonial and Indian life of 17th century Virginia. We provide multi-curricular, SOL-aligned programs for Pre-K through Grade 8. These programs emphasize age-appropriate hands-on group activities. Outreach programs that bring interpreters to your school are also available. Please note that multiple programs may be booked to run consecutively in order to enhance SOL-learning objectives.

On Site Programs:

History Kids, Grades: Pre-K(3) - K, 45 minutes; optional 15-minute craft

Participate in childhood skills of the 17th century through chores, stories and games. Make & Take craft can be added.

Theme Choices: Indian or English children. Also available as an Outreach Program.

Mapping the James River, Grades 1 – 5, One hour (outdoor/indoor program)

Learn, through maps, about the impact and history of the James River on the environment, people, places, and history of the area. Create a 3-D map of the future as a team-building activity. Also available as an Outreach Program.

People of the River: Powhatan Indians, Grades 1 – 5, One hour

Tour Arrohateck, a re-created Virginia Indian village, and experience early Powhatan Indian culture through farming, food preparation and cultural activities.

Learn about the life, hardships and problem-solving techniques of early English settlers through tobacco farming, trade and defense. Compare and contrast life in and between the Indian and English cultures of 17th-century Virginia through problem-solving activities.

Virginia Governments of the 17th Century, Grades 6 – 8, One hour

Experience early Virginia government: social duties, civic action, communal needs and economic systems. Follow the development of early American government by establishing rules for safety, health and security and through barter, trade and exchange.

Collaborative Programs

Voyage to Virginia, Grades 4 – 6, Two sites/four hours

Visit Agecroft Hall and Henricus Historical Park to discover the differences between the environment, economics and lives of early 17th-century English servants and Virginia Colonial indentured servants.

People and Environment, Grades 6 – 9, One hour

Experience, through maps and the archaeological record, the importance of the environment in determining how two very different cultures (native Indians and English Colonials) lived in and adapted to 17th century Virginia.

Powhatan Indians , Grades 1 – 5, One hour

Learn how the environment affects how people live and work together to meet their basic needs. This hands-on, team-building, problem-solving program focuses on the Powhatan Indians of 17th-century Virginia.

Surviving the 17th Century - REVISED!

Using a hands-on, problem-solving approach, students will explore how early English settlers to Virginia survived a new and challenging environment at the Citie of Henricus.

Reservation Information

  • All school programs are aligned with the Virginia SOLs. Please see each program description.
  • A 14-day advanced reservation is required.
  • A non-refundable $20 deposit per day is required to hold your program date.
  • Final payment is due upon arrival to on-site or outreach programs.
  • Program cancellations due to inclement weather may be rescheduled with no forfeiture of deposit. Programs will be rescheduled based upon date availability.
  • Attendance numbers must be updated 24 hours prior to the scheduled program. Fees will be based on the most recent number registered.
  • Minimum size group: 10 students

Fees

On-Site Programs:

  • $4 per child per program; a minimum of 10 children per group. Teachers in Chesterfield County and Henrico County public schools qualify for a discounted fee.
  • One adult is required for every 10 students and will be admitted free of charge.
  • The fee for each additional adult is $5 per person.

Outreach Programs:

  • Winter prices (December through mid-March): $80 first session/$60 each additional session
  • Fall/Spring prices: $100 first session/$80 each additional session
